What...? Kat's secret weapon is a PC-standard serial device?

Are you serial Ton?

Parallel port joke, hahahaha. Seriously how many people reading this will have seen a parallel port ?

Amazing use of color! Interesting that we can see most of the background for Kat, it's usually pitch black in the æther.

she had less than a few seconds to do all this, how is this possible?

This is Kat's visualization of of Omega's interior space. So a parallel port is just her mind's translation for "high speed I/O place". I wonder how Annie would see it?

20 Jun 2025 | 1:16 AM
Aecius

Is that a VGA port? No wonder Omega's blind if you messed with that, better get her HDMI after all this is done!

That's quite a SCSI pun you made there.

You have to be a certain age, and of a certain technical background, to truly get this pun. I am both... (Although that's only a DB19, not a DB25.)

It's quite a good serial that you're doing here, bud!

If anyone would recognize an RS-232 port, it would be a robot demigod. Maybe the only one to recognize it, as well.

I wonder if Kat's little polygonal form is just temporary. I wonder if it'll change into something more typical of the ether as Kat gets used to her new abilities. Or is Kat considered something altogether new?

Kat and Annie are so smart, yet so gentle. I mean, they can clearly wreck god-like destruction, but they try so hard to talk thinks through and comfort people. They've grown so much

Seeing something as pedestrian as a D-sub connector, even one with a non-standard pin count, in an otherwise escapist comic felt odd.

20 Jun 2025 | 5:21 AM
Oryon

Whoa, this page raises more questions than it answers! How did Kat travel to the Omega machine's location? Wouldn't Omega have instantly known about it? Can she send her virtual sprite into the real world as well as the ether. in which case she would have been invisible to Omega? Or is this forbidding chamber all in a virtual space, probably also invisible to Omega? Or all of the above? Is VR in the same dimension as the ether in this cosmos, or another pocket space? Deep questions....

Isn't that jack a few pins shy of the standard for most such D-shaped parallel ports? Or is that a British-specific thing? Just... courious. XD

A DB-19 connector? That IS special!

Lmao ???? those old parallel ports went out of fashion in early 2000s. Though I love the pun. Guess she is running on a Linux based OS.

20 Jun 2025 | 6:51 AM

After win98 they shutdown direct access to writing and reading from parallel ports. So either she is running on old windows or she is Linux based OS

I enjoyed the subtle joke linking the graphic & the author’s comment! Not too sure about the cyanish color grading. Well, it does mirror / compliment Annie’s overall red schema.

WOW! A DB-19! Those things are as rare as hen's teeth!

20 Jun 2025 | 7:09 AM
:)

A parallel port ... with 19 pins! O_O :) It must be modern, internal USB or Cortex or so :) Those were the times, when a port lived more than 3 years; I still have boxes full of that stuff :)

serial port?! Ahah)

Nitpicker

The parallel reference made me laugh, good one, but then I could not help but notice the pin count is incorrect. Connector shown as 19 pins, which is not a standard size. Parallel ports used DB-25 (25 pins). I suppose the court has a lot of non-standard hardware.

This looks suspicious, like maybe she did something unintentionally, like...killing Zimmy?

20 Jun 2025 | 9:02 AM

Kat has learned probably from Annie's example how to be present both in the real world and the ether the same time, even if she still needs technology for ether access.

20 Jun 2025 | 9:07 AM

Kat's avatar still needs update, just like on Page 3010. She obviously hasn't had enough spare time yet for it.

>Now you're thinking in parallel >She's looking at a parallel port BOOO. As a computer nerd I approve of this pun. (Parallel ports of this particular configuration do actually exist, too, though I don't think they're especially common; DB-25 is, I think, the parallel port most people who know what a parallel port is are used to seeing.)

Ugh, D-sub 19. I guess Kat is resourceful or has an old IIe available.

There seems to be a couple of computers requiring lot of power: Anja's amazing computer (Pages 517, 1017), Kat's computer (Page 2755) and the Omega device. The first two are at a safe location; Annie and Paz needed access granted to get there. Not sure whether the distortion undermined this security (Page 2981) but Kat reached the highly secure location of the Omega device fairly easily.

Ah, lovely -- Anybody got a SCSII cable for the God machine interface? Maybe dust off an IBM serial mouse and keyboard while you're at it?

20 Jun 2025 | 11:42 AM
Aion

Hey, look, it's a 68K Macintosh floppy port! (Unless it's Atari-- Omega seems like a Mac girl to me tho :)

20 Jun 2025 | 12:04 PM
Minghash

How can one be so technically advanced and still have a DB19 access port ?

20 Jun 2025 | 12:14 PM
Aodha

Shouldn't that be a serial port? Parallel ports were usually used to connect peripherals (scanners, printers). USB, ethernet and wifi eventually replaced it. Serial ports are still found on some servers, particularly 'headless' (no display, etc) ones so you can connect another computer in case of problems (the terminal), and communicate via a command line. But this had to have been a custom computer. The parallel port allows simultaneous 2-way communications, so it would be interesting to see the original interface that was used until Omega became interconnected with everything. If the court is analytical philosophy (physicalism, logic), what is the forest/ether? Not continental philosophy. Since the two are being bridged... this is always an interesting story, and watching it unfold is a pleasure.
